Modern Family Portraits

First, you must know that I'm a lover of words and stories at heart. These days, I prefer to use a camera to share them.

My hope:

Is that my sessions are filled with lucky shots that are no accident;
That I am not merely an observer, but a narrator;
and a craftsman that is masterful at fostering conditions that allow for real moments to unfold.

Anyone with an eye for composition and light can document life as it happens. I firmly believe it takes something more to dig beneath the surface--to evolve into a photographer who is more than a picture taker, but a picture maker.

There is a moment of extraordinary that can be extracted from every 10 minutes of ordinary. Capturing it is not about point of view, equipment or framing. Instead, it stems from connection: connection to who the photographer is as an artist, and most importantly, connection to the people being photographed.

What does love look like? Exhilaration? Exasperation? How did she gently twist your hair around her fingers when she was three? And, what did it feel like the day you first held his tiny hands in yours?

I aspire for my photographs help to tell the stories. Theirs. Mine. Yours too...

the professional child photography community is a pretty networked crowd. photography sites like flickr allow us to connect and virtually watch our kiddos grow up. i’ve known peta mazey and rachel devine online since liam was just a few months old. i met peta for the first time when we were in san diego and she was traveling here from new zealand. this time, rachel was on vacation from australia and peta was along too — what a pleasure to meet up with these two fabulous women and photographers.

we met at the virginia beach oceanfront for a little sand + water + photo play. the kids had a blast while we schlepped all of their kid gear. that’s a pretty typical meetup these days.

did i mention that rachel has some of the cutest kiddos you’ll ever meet? you don’t have to take my word for it, just see for yourself.

thanks for sharing a piece of your vacation with me ladies. it was a treat!

ohh what fun, steph! so jealous that you got to meet/play with rachel and peta. love the “pictures” shot of liam and gemma, and i couldn’t help smiling at him jumping in the water under that (gorgeous) pier.

Oh it looks like you all had SO MUCH FUN!! All the pictures are beautiful, I especially love the one of Liam dancing under the peir!! It is so him Glad you got to meet up with them while they were in town.
